Marie Herrington
Marie is a composer, vocalist, and keyboardist originating from North Carolina, who performs regularly in Baltimore, Washington DC, New Orleans, and New York City. Marie’s composition mentors include Ben Zervigon, Libby Larsen, Jacob Wilkinson, Jake Heggie, Judah Adashi, and Jeff Marsh. Marie is best known for the variety of musical skills she possesses: working as a freelance composer of post-classical music, a freelance contemporary soprano, a freelance organist and pianist, a private voice/piano instructor, and being a full time music director having 3 choirs.
One of Marie’s most recent composition/new music projects include a sound installation part of Alluvium Ensemble at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Marie was also a featured composer in the Sparks and Wiry Cries SongSLAM Competition this past January, where her team raised the most money. This year, Marie has premiered two new pieces at Govans Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, MD: St. Sophia's Cathedral written for pipe organ, and an arrangement of Were You There written for the Govans Chancel Choir. Marie was commissioned to write a piece for orchestra, choir, soloists, and harp that debuted at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House this past May in Alexandria, VA. Marie is a regular guest lecturer/faculty member at the University of the Southern Caribbean, and this year was invited back to talk about her pieces St. Sophia's Cathedral, and Darkness (for voice and piano) to the music theory classes of the University.
